Nasdaq Appoints Mattias Hammarqvist As CEO Of Its Brokerage Services Unit
Nasdaq Broker Services AB, an investment firm licensed by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, has rocked its ranks by appointing Mattias Hammarqvist as its new CEO with immediate effect. The promotion crowns the latest Nasdaq nomination, choosing to raise one of its own veterans in northern capital markets.
Mr Hammarqvist will take the reins from Peter Ekström, the unit’s interim CEO, who will instead focus on future business opportunities at Nasdaq Broker Services as head of business development. In its place, the group chose Mr. Hammarqvist, a capital markets veteran, who is changing roles after serving as vice president, sales and account management, Nordic Equities & Derivatives, at Nasdaq.
In this role, Mr. Hammarqvist will be responsible for a wide range of responsibilities, including overseeing all activities and operations related to the Nasdaq brokerage services. Nasdaq Broker Services operates as a research and investment arm of Nasdaq Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ), one of the largest trading groups in the world. The group focuses on the reception and transmission of orders and the execution of clients also providing custody and related services such as cash management and guarantees.

Mr. Hammarqvist has been part of Nasdaq’s Nordic Equities management team for the past decade, originally joining the unit in 2007. During his tenure with the group, he was also involved in all aspects of Nasdaq Nordic’s market structure, including overseeing the transition to new regulatory regimes. Its expertise in this area will be decisive before the adoption of the MiFID II regulation next January.
Overall, he has worked for over seventeen years in the financial services industry, starting his career at OMX in 2000, focusing on the business development of the company. Most of his career has seen him based in Stockholm, with the exception of a brief stint in London for two years, citing information made public on his Linkedin profile.
Arminta Saladziene, Chairman of the Nasdaq Broker Services Board, said: “Mattias brings a solid background of the capital markets in Sweden and the Nordic region, combined with an in-depth knowledge of equity sales and market structure, and long-standing relationships with the main players in the Nordic market. I am delighted that he has agreed to take the lead in the growth of our business in brokerage services.
“I look forward to taking the brokerage business to the next level and further strengthening our valuable relationships with our clients. To ensure business continuity, I will work closely with Peter and the rest of the team. There is an increasing demand in the market for our services and an ongoing discussion on how to effectively manage aftermarket services in the near future, ”added Mr. Hammarqvist.
Mr Hammarqvist’s appointment marks the last transfer of staff in the region to the Nasdaq since two of the promotions earlier this year. Last February, Nasdaq’s Nordic and Baltic Fixed Income and Post-Trade units promoted Fredrik Ekström and Julia Haglind to new management positions.
